General surgery at HRI win national award

The department of general surgery (pictured) have won a prestigious award for their work improving patients survival after emergency operations.     They were awarded the National Emergency Laparotomy Audit (NELA) Prize Paper at the International Congress of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland in Belfast.

Checkem Lads and CHFT go into schools to talk about cancer

   In a brand new development for CHFT, our colleagues have been to a secondary school in Halifax to talk to teenagers about the importance of checking their bodies.     Early detection is key to the success of any cancer diagnosis, so an hour-long session at Park Lane School in Exley was organised by our Macmillan Information manager, Dinah Coggon.

Not long left to have your say on extra public sessions planned

   There are fewer than four weeks left to have your say on proposed changes to local hospital and community services.        Colleagues and residents across Calderdale and Greater Huddersfield are being encouraged to get involved in the public consultation and complete the Have your Say survey to help shape the future of local health services.

We've gone viral on Facebook!

Staff from Spring Cottage, based onsite at HRI, have come together with staff at another Childrens Place Day Nursery in Ravensthorpe to give the garden areas a revamp.     The idea came from brainstorming amongst the team on how the outdoor provision can be enhanced to encourage children to investigate and explore, whilst developing their knowledge.

Farewell Helen Galvin after 31 years

Consultant dermatologist, Dr Helen Galvin, has retired following 31 years with the Trust.     Helen started as a clinical assistant, becoming an Associate Specialist and finally taking up a consultant post in 2002, and has been involved in many of the changes and challenges that have been faced by the department over this time.  read more

Four year old Sonny donates £125 worth of toys after winning a competition

Four year old Sonny came in to the children's ward in June 2014 with his mum Sheryl, who works here at Calderdale Royal in the catering department, and dad Daniel.     Sonny was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes just before his 2nd birthday, and was in hospital initially for four days in HDU.  read more

Patricia Guilfoyle's surprise retirement

Sister Patricia "Patsi" Guilfoyle was called back to ICU at HRI for a meeting which had been "brought forward"... and rushed straight into her surprise farewell.     Patsi, is leaving after nursing career of 30 years including early stints in Coventry and in London before coming to Yorkshire because she loves the place.  read more

After the recent launch of our new website, comms are keen to ensure all information is as up-to-date as it can be.     All consultant profiles have been uploaded to the website here, though many are still empty of details apart from their names.  read more

We've had some good feedback about the changes to Datix that happened on 16 May. There a few things we'd like to update colleagues on to make sure our incidents are reported accurately.  read more

Our Estates & Facilities team

CRH has been operating for 15 years!

In April 2016, CRH had been open and operating for 15 years.     Colleagues who were part of the Trust in April 2001 from the Estates & Facilities Team at CRH, Engie & ISS Mediclean who moved into the new Calderdale Royal Hospital came together to mark the occasion.  read more

Staff, patients and visitors were invited to come along and find out what our research teams do for clinical trials day last week.     There were interactive stands set up in the main foyer at CRH and HRI, and research staff were on hand to talk about their work.  read more

Good luck tonight to Obe's friends at Pride of Huddersfield awards

Theatres at HRI are tonight among the finalists at a Gala evening at the John Smith Stadium, Huddersfield.     It's staged by the Examiner newspaper on the same lines of the Pride of Britain national awards and recognises local people who are special.  read more
