Who won the Golden Igel? Surgery's masked ball awards night

Trophies modelled on surgical instruments were handed out at the annual departmental night out at The Fleece, Barkisland.  An igel is a breathing device for when patients are anaesthetised. There were also trophies shaped like facemasks, retractors and dissectors!  Dr Steven Hill arranged awards  on a Masked Ball Theme and styled the trophies.

Marvell's a Master! Helen's success after four years study

Helen Marvell's holiday bags will be lighter this year - no more text books.  She's just achieved her Masters in Advanced Fertility Practice  and for the first time  in four years she can leave the heavy stuff behind and pack a John Grisham.  She said: " I feel quite humbled by people's messages to congratulate me.

Bite-sized learning....putting the four Rs into action to make sure our medicines are stored correctly

This week we want to focus on medicines fridges. Our medicines need to be stored correctly and at the right temperature to make sure they don't become ineffective.  If we don't do the right checks it could mean they aren't effective and patients have to stay with us for longer than they need to, or may need extra treatment.  read more

Elaine's heading for them tha' hills (well...the Lakes) after 45 years in the NHS

Community HCA Elaine Taylor hung up her car keys this week, as she retired from her role supporting wound care throughout Brigg Royd and Calderdale at CHFT, saying "I'm going to miss my patients so much".  Elaine worked two days and two nights each week.  read more

He wore it well. Physio Pete Gilligan celebrates Armed Force Reservist Day

Physio Pete Gilligan wore his uniform  to mark  Armed Force Reservist Day.   Pete, who joined us two years ago, is with the 207 Field Hospital based in Manchester part of 2 Medical Brigade.  As a reservist he must spend 27 days a year in training but has yet to be deployed.  read more

Lists of GP practices can now be found on the intranet to help colleagues associate a GP or practice with a patient when they are using EPR.     The lists have been provided by the Clinical Commissioning Group and will be updated each month. The information is stored under   read more

Flush taps to keep Legionella at bay.

Our consultant in Microbiology, Gavin Boyd, wants to remind colleagues of the importance of regularly flushing taps throughout the Trust to help reduce the risks of legionella.  Gavin said:  "Legionella can live in water systems, particularly in large buildings with extensive pipework, such as our hospitals.  read more

Gruelling Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge completed by ward 5

Our HRI Ward 5 colleagues raised £600 after completing the gruelling Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge.  Gail Flynn, Amy Lubgan , Rebecca Welch and Penny Halliwell set out to raise money for new televisions on wheels.  Senior Nurse Rebecca Welch said:  “We walked 26 miles in over 13 hours.  read more

Royal Marsden Manual of Clinical Nursing Procedures - available online

From this Saturday - 1 July - all colleagues will be able to access the online version of the Royal Marsden Manual of Clinical Nursing Procedures. It supports clinical work, as well as being an aid for the nurse revalidation process.     Access will be via the Clinical Tools section of the CHFT intranet.
