Almost 140 deaf patients have been supported through their CHFT experience by Topp Language Solutions - our specialist British Sign Language (BSL) provider - since we started working with them June.
Managing Director Cassandra Topp told us their experience of working with our Trust has been excellent and they are having lots of contact with deaf patients as well as teams who request a BSL interpreter to attend an appointment.
Casssandra who has personal experience herself having deaf parents said:"Everything's working well and the staff at CHFT are great to work with. The majority of requests have been through Medical, Surgical & Anaesthetics, and Families & Specialist Services divisions".
As part of the new working partnership an innovative web booking system was co-designed especially for CHFT and Cassandra has had enquiries from other NHS Trusts interested in using their services. Mid-Yorks are now working with them and wrote this testamonial: "At last someone less focused on their own financial development and gain, someone who utterly understands the needs of her service and its dependants and above all someone who absolutely cares. Her focus and determination to deliver the best quality service available to those who depend on her skills is an absolute credit to her and TLS as a whole."
Around 11 million people have hearing difficulties or are deaf in the UK.
As well as providing BSL services for our deaf patients, we work with Pearl Linguistics to provide interpretation services for patients who do not have English as their first language.
Associate Director of Engagement & Inclusion Ruth Mason said "We really wanted to get it right for our deaf patients. It’s been a delight to work with Cassandra and she really understood our needs. Together we have created what we think is a highly successful and bespoke service".
