General surgery at HRI win national award

The department of general surgery (pictured) have won a prestigious award for their work improving patients survival after emergency operations.     They were awarded the National Emergency Laparotomy Audit (NELA) Prize Paper at the International Congress of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland in Belfast.

Back on the by-pass.. after a triple by-pass. Driver Barry Ackroyd is our next Star Award winner

A year ago this very month our driver Barry Ackroyd underwent a triple heart by-pass. He's since battled back to work and is this month's Star Award winner for "taking the time to make people feel special, without realising just how special he is himself.

Here's Brendan Brown - our new Director of Nursing

Brendan Brown

   A real transformation specialist, Brendan Brown joins us as Director of Nursing from the Burton Hospitals where he had been Director of Nursing since February 2013. In March 2015, he took over the portfolio for operational management and took on the joint portfolio of Chief Nurse and Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Chief Executive.

Amazing comeback wins trophy for THIS

There was the legendary Liverpool FC in Istanbul in 2005 and earlier this month there was Liverpool v Dortmund, but a comeback for the Health Informatics team is well up there with the great comebacks in footie history..... ish!     They clinched the trophy at the annual Leeds NHS 5-a-side at Powerleague Leeds Central last Friday night.

"They are the people who everyone knows but never sees!"     That's how Roberta Lister described the switchboard team at HRI which handles around 3000 calls every weekday and 1,000 on both Saturday and Sunday  - providing a brilliant front line services for us, our patients and their families.

Oh Cecilia...RCN President praises our nurses

The President of the Royal College of Nursing, Cecilia Anim, paid us a visit to see compassionate care on our wards.     The visit was part of day in Yorkshire looking at excellent nursing practice in the region.

Cuteness overload - Janine with the Lockley family

   A couple have made a donation to the Calderdale Birth Centre as thanks for supporting them to have baby Rory after tragically losing their first baby.     Rory was born after a four-day labour on the Birth Centre, and throughout Grant and Rebecca Lockley were reassured and kept in good humour by the team there.

Michelle's amazing life-saving effort rewarded

   Our healthcare assistant Michelle Simpson has been hailed a local hero for her attempts to save a little boy's life.     She was one of a series of heroes - including police officers, staff and volunteers, and members of the public - who have gone the extra mile to keep the communities of Kirklees safe.
